Occasionally a book or article will not be available in the library's databases or at one of the other HELM libraries. In these instances, the library will try to request the item from another library through interlibrary loan.
If there is a book or article that you need, and it is not available through HELM or the library's databases, you may fill out the ILL form to request it. You can also call us at either 978-556-3400 or 978-738-7400 to make a request.
The public library in the town where you reside can provide you with a library card. Each library has its own procedures for giving out library cards. Most libraries require some form of identification to obtain a library card.
Below you will find links to some of the local public libraries.
If you already have a library card from a library belonging to an automated resource sharing network (i.e., Minuteman, NOBLE, MVLC, C/WMARS, OCLN, or SAILS), your card will be accepted at other libraries within that network. You may be able to register at other networks using your local card.
Commonwealth Catalog is the statewide system of sharing library resources. When NECC Libraries and HELM network members do not have an item, NECC students, faculty, and staff can use the Commonwealth Catalog to search through all participating libraries in one easy step and sort results by books, audiobooks, or DVDs. Simply request the item with your library card and it’s delivered right to NECC Libraries for pickup, usually within 1-2 weeks. To access the Commonwealth catalog, click the link at the bottom of this box.
Funding for the Commonwealth Catalog is provided by the MBLC and the Institute of Museum and Library Services. The service is managed by Fenway Libraries Online with participation from the nine automated Massachusetts library networks and several public universities.
The Boston Public Library (BPL) offers an eCard to Massachusetts residents, students who attend school, and those who commute to work for an employer in the Commonwealth.
