Searching is most successful when a topic is broken down into keywords joined by 'and.'

If your topic is “the role of female soldiers during the Civil War, ” then the important keywords will be:

Keywords:                                          

female                                               

soldiers                                                

Civil War                                            

Combine keywords to search:  female and soldier and Civil War

 

Add, subtract or substitute keywords to narrow or widen your search. Think of synonyms for your keywords.

Keywords:                                          Synonyms:

female                                                   woman, women  

soldiers                                                 officers, veterans

Civil War                                               American Civil War

Add, subtract, or substitute keywords to search:

  • women and soldiers and Civil War
  • women and veterans and American Civil War
  • female and officers and American Civil War
  • etc.
