A research guide for NECC History and Civilization courses

Researching a topic

corner page of a historical textYour instructor may have suggested a list of research topics for you to consider or you may have to come up with one on your own.

Try to find a topic that interests you, and one that you are curious to learn more about.

Check for books and articles about your topic in the library databases. Make sure there are enough sources to support your topic.  Be prepared to change your topic if you are struggling to find research sources, either by narrowing or broadening your topic to find more sources.

Selecting a topic

Choosing a topic is part of the research process.  Getting started can be challenging and you will likely change your topic as you begin to search for sources and write your paper. Don't be afraid to let your topic evolve!
