How to Use Artstor

A guide to finding, viewing and using digital images from ARTstor.

Search and Browse

There are two main methods to finding images in ARTstor - searching and browsing.

SEARCH ARTstor by:

  • Keyword search all data fields for every image in the ARTstor Digital Library. You can search for multiple words or for exact phrases if you enclose search terms in quotation marks.
  • Advanced Search will allow you to limit or filter your search by field, date parameters, collection, classification, or geography.

Or BROWSE collections by:

  • Geography- select specific country folders by clicking the (+ sign) to view works created by artists from that country or works located in that country.
  • Classification - view images within sixteen broad classifications. Some of these include; Architecture and city planning, Drawings and Watercolors, Maps, charts and graphs, and Photographs. Click the (+ sign) to further sort each classification by geography.
  • Collection- view all the collections in ARTstor. Click the (+ sign) to see the classifications in the specific collection.

Using Wildcards in ARTstor

  • _underscore for character replacement              example: "m_net" = "monet", "manet", etc
  • * asterisk to represent characters                        example: "ren*" = "renoir", "rene", "rendering"
  • $ dollar sign to search root words                          example: "$paint" = "painting", "repainted", "unpainted"
  • " " quotation marks for an exact phrase              example: "le moulin de la galette"
