Searching for Articles in Databases

You might find articles on your topic in a number of different databases, but these are good starting points for topics in radiology and digital imaging.

Types of Articles

In searching for articles, you may come across several different types. These types hold true regardless of whether you find the article in print, through Google, or in one of the library's databases.

  • News - We generally think of newspapers or websites like CNN when we think of news articles, but any article that is reporting on events as they happen is a news source.
  • Popular - We use "popular" here to mean "for a general audience." Almost any magazine you can think of will fall into this category, as do many sites online that create general content for a wide audience (like BuzzFeed).
  • Scholarly (or Academic, or Peer-Reviewed) - These are articles written by experts (scientists, doctors, researchers, etc.) for experts, often directly relaying the original results of a study. Not many scholarly articles can be found in your average Google search since they are published in academic journals, but these are often the type of articles your instructors prefer you use since they are generally authoritative and very reliable.
  • Trade - An article in a trade publication is about the industry itself, for instance, a magazine focused on new technologies or best practices in radiology, written for practitioners "in the field." These kinds of articles are not considered scholarly, but can give real insight how research and trends are applied in a profession.
