Visual Arts

A research guide for NECC students in the visual arts: fine arts, photography, multimedia, and graphic design & visual communication.

Search for Articles

Because art touches on many subjects in many ways, we might find articles about art in many different places. We might search for artists and art history in a general database, but art therapy in a health database, and arts in education in an education database.

Here is a short list of databases to begin your search, but if you have a more specific topic, ask a librarian which database might yield the most relevant results.

Search the Library Catalog

The NECC Libraries have over 46,000 books and films. We also have a collection of 20,000 e-books which are in our library catalog. If you want to see what the other libraries in our network own, change the scope to All HELM or View Entire Collection. You can request books and movies using your NECC Library card and PIN number.

Remember, if you can't find any material on your topic, ask an NECC librarian for assistance.

Useful Websites and Searching for Art on the Web

When searching for art images on the web, it is best to determine which institution or museum holds or owns the piece in which you are interested, and then visit their site. Relying on a Google search for an image can sometimes result in poor resolution, misattribution of the work, or other incorrect information.

For instance, the image at right, Marc Chagall's Village Street, is owned by the Boston Museum of Fine Arts. Click on the link to see a high-resolution image and more details about this work.

Searching the holding institution ensures you are seeing the correct image, and institutions usually provide high-resolution images and information such as the date of the work, provenance, more information about the artist, and other important details.

Remember, images need citation too, and using images from museums or galleries makes citing works of art easier.
