You may have been taught other strategies for evaluating websites (like CRAAP: Currency, Relevance, Authority, Accuracy, and Purpose).
While each of these "checklist" items are definitely helpful tools, they only evaluate the site itself.
Using lateral reading seeks independent verification of a site's claims and reliability, so is often faster, and more accurate.
