Your library card allows you to access your NECC Library Account to request and renew books and other items You will be prompted to enter your library card number and password when accessing the library's electronic resources (like databases) from off-campus.
Your library barcode can be found in the bottom corner of your NECC Student ID card. Visit the Welcome Express Desk in the Behrakis One-Stop Student Center, 100 Elliot Street in Haverhill, or the Welcome Express Desk in the John R. Dimitry Building at 45 Franklin Street, Lawrence, MA 01840 to receive a new Student ID with the library card number or use the following information:
Your library card number is 203850 + your 8-digit NECC ID Number.
(For instance, if your Student ID number is 00223344, your library card number is: 20385000223344)
Your password is your 8-digit birthday.
(For instance, if your birthday is April 15, 1996, your password is: 04151996)
If this information does not work, contact the library. NECC ID numbers expire once you stop taking classes, or after a set period of time if you are not a student. To re-activate your library barcode number, contact the library.
Below are some guides created by the NECC library staff that you can explore and share with your students. These guides can aid you with navigating the NECC Library databases!
How do I embed a database to my Blackboard course?
There are two ways you can embed NECC library databases in your Blackboard course. You can provide the NECC library's databases, or you can select specific databases and share them in your course. Whether you decide to share the list of databases from the library's webpage or select specific databases, remember to make sure that the links include the library's proxy. It is beneficial to include instructions on how to log into the library's databases.
Providing the list of the library's databases:
You can provide a link to the NECC library's list of databases webpage in your course. This can be done using the LTI tool. Sharing the library's database webpage is similar to sharing a NECC library libguide. Below are the detailed steps for sharing the list of databases.
Selecting and sharing specific databases for my course:
You can share specific databases for your course, by sharing them as hyperlinks. Identify some of the NECC library's databases that you wish your students to access. Then, share them as a hyperlink in a module or resource in your course. When you share the NECC library's databases this way, remember to provide share the link that includes the proxy. This will allow students to log in with their NECC library card.
How do I embed a library database article into my Blackboard course?
To embed an article from one of the NECC databases, you must locate the permalink. The location of the article's permalink will vary according to the database. Below is a list of where the permalinks are located for most of NECC Library databases.
The permalink in EBSCO databases is located on the right of your screen under the column titled "Tools." The permalink will be located as the last option of this column (pictured below and pointed with a red arrow).
When you press "Permalink," a ribbon with the permalink will appear (pictured below and highlighted in a red box).
Visit this document to learn how to embed articles from other NECC databases.
How can my students access database articles?
Students can access NECC Library databases through the hyperlink that is shared in the Blackboard course. When students access the article's link, they will be redirected to the authentication proxy. In the authentication proxy, students must submit their library card number and password. Once they have submitted the aforementioned credentials, they will be redirected to the article.
Before you share a permalink with your students, make sure that the link actually sends the students to the article you intend to share. An easy way to do this is to copy/paste the URL address/permalink to another browser. If it directs you to the article, that means that the URL/permalink works. If the URL/permalink sends you to the homepage of the database, it means that the hyperlink does not work and you must find an alternate link or method.
What is a permalink?
Permalink is short for permanent link. These are URL addresses that are static and do not change. These are mostly used in databases, news websites, and digital archives. In the case of databases, the types of links will be used for articles, electronic books, and/or videos. Permalinks are unique to an individual item located within each database.
How do permalinks work?
NECC libraries are subscribed to various databases. To access each database, the NECC requires an authentication process through a proxy server. The same happens when sharing a permalink through Blackboard, email, chat, or any online platform. Each of the NECC permalinks will start with the following prefix: "https://login.ezproxyness.helmlib.org/login?url=", followed by the domain address of the database you have requested to access (the suffix).
An article for a NECC database will have a similar permalink to the following example:
https://login.ezproxyness.helmlib.org/login?url=http://search.ebscohost.com/login.aspx?direct=true&db=aph&AN=146389765&site=ehost-live&scope=site
The highlighted yellow part of the permalink is the fixed prefix, while the blue highlighted part is the suffix. The suffix is the URL address of the database. In this case, the permalink of the article in the example (above) belongs to an Ebsco database. If copy/pasted into a browser, the link will forward you to the library authentication proxy. Once you authenticate your library credentials, you will access the article.
When setting up a permalink
When you select the "Web Link" tool, you will be directed to a screen titled "Create Web Link" (pictured below). Here, you will be able to share the permalink from the database. In the "Create Web Link," you will provide the following web link information:
When you scroll to the bottom of the page, you will see additional options such as the ones pictured:
NECC libraries have two video databases: Alexander Press Academic Video Online, and Kanopy. Both databases provide similar features for sharing and embedding their videos. They also provide the option of sharing clips from the videos you wish to include in your class.
How do I embed Academic Video Online into Blackboard?
There are two ways to share a video from Academic Video Online to Blackboard. Both options are located in the same tool. Once you select the video you wish to view from Academic Video Online, select the option of "Share" located in the top toolbar of your screen (pictured on the right, and pointed with a red arrow). This will display a box under the video with the following information "To embed your video in an LMS or other website." You will notice that there is a link with the button "Copy Permalink" and an HTML code with a button that reads "Copy Embedded Code" (highlighted in a red box in the picture). Once you copy your preferred option, paste it into your Blackboard course module.
How do I embed videos from Kanopy?
There are two ways to share a video from Kanopy to Blackboard. Both options are located in the same tool. Once you select the video you wish to view from Kanopy, select the option of "Share" located under the video window on your screen (pictured and pointed with a red arrow). This will display a box under the video with two tabs, "Share" and "Embed".
The "Share" tab displays the permalink of the video (pictured above and highlighted in a red box), while the "Embed" displays the HTML code of the video (pictured below). Select your preferred option, copy it, and paste it to your Blackboard course module.
