The Dominican Republic is located on the eastern side of the island of La Hispaniola in the Caribbean Sea. It occupies two-thirds of the island’s land area, with the remainder belonging to the country of Haiti. Only two islands in the region are divided between two nations in this way (the other is split between Sint Maarten and the French territory of St. Martin). Numerous small islands also lie within the territory of the Dominican Republic, although most are uninhabited and are set aside for nature conservation.
